Resilient Design is a Chicago-based company providing design, installation, and stewardship of native gardens in Chicago and its surrounding region.

We are seeking a Gardener to join our team during our planting and stewardship season. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about native gardening from a small, committed team.

Hours/Schedule: 15-30 Hours Per Week from May – October

Compensation: Dependent on Skill and Experience

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Under the direction of the Lead Horticulturist, perform garden stewardship tasks including:

• Planting
• Weeding
• Watering
• Pruning
• Spring Cutback

Under the direction of the Lead Horticulturist, assist in garden installations, specifically

• Site Prep
  • Removal of plant material and other debris
  • Cutting in new bed lines
  • Installation of bed edging when needed
  • Mulch application
• Planting and watering in plants
• Keeping worksite orderly

Other Duties:

• Receive plant orders, checking for accuracy and completeness of deliveries
• Potting up and dividing plants into new containers
• Tool maintenance (Sharpening, cleaning)

Desired Qualifications

• Ability to follow directions and solve problems both independently and as a team
• Basic knowledge of plants and gardening practices
• A desire to learn about plants and gardening, particularly plants native to the region
• Have prior experience working in horticulture, gardening, landscaping or a related field
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical labor, including extended periods of time walking, standing, bending, kneeling
• Ability and willingness to work outdoors in heat, rain, and snow
• Ability to communicate and work with a small team, supervised and unsupervised

Work Environment

• Entirely outdoors: subject to a variety of weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, humidity. Exposure to pollen, dust, and various plant materials
• Repetitive tasks and physical exertion throughout the day, including standing, bending, kneeling, and using tools
• Small team
